LINER NOTES: We were going to attempt the Asheweig River until bad weather, and then forest fires, forced us to travel the Winisk instead. An ice jam that spring had cleared through the town, taking much of it into the Bay. The new town of Peawanuck was just under construction, located on high ground 16 miles upriver. The people were all living in platform tents, and so the place had quite a frontier-town feel. Helicopters were flying back and forth between the new town and the airport, ferrying freight. We had to paddle the final 16 miles down to the old settlement at the coast to get flown out. The old town was quite a mess, as the flood had tossed houses all over the place. It was eerie....
