Lost Another We were 12 days from Wapmagoostui when we lost the canoe and two wannigans. I thought the capsized, empty canoe was going to make the eddy and avoid the falls. It tried twice, but got kicked back out each time. The boys tried to lasso it using bow line with a medium-sized stone attached as a grappling hook. But, in the end it took a perfect line right over the falls. It lodged itself between some rocks below the falls before breaking up overnight. We found the bow and stern stems, still attached to the gunnels, on a gravel bar the next day. The center thwart was still intact as well, so we rescued the camp's tump and the canoe numbers (which I kept, this time). To make room in the canoes for two more paddlers, we had to ditch a couple of food wannigans. So I am well versed in the "versatile kitchen." Bill Seeley, 10/22/99
