MAY 18, 2011 Elk Lake mill takeover by EACOM EACOM Timber Corporation is buying Liskeard Lumber's minority interest in Elk Lake Planing Mill, according to a corporate press release. EACOM owns two-thirds of the mill. Liskeard Lumber sold its one-third interest for $15 million. It was an original partner in the mill in 1965. The sale closes on July 31. Montreal-based EACOM, purchased Domtar's lumber business last June. The acquisition gave it seven Ontario and Quebec sawmills, including Nairn Centre, which cuts in western Temagami, and a majority interest in two more, including a two-thirds interest in Elk Lake. The latter gets a good portion of its spruce and jackpine from northern Temagami. Domtar no longer operates in Temagami. EACOM, a TSX Venture Exchange-listed company, was founded in 2008 by Rick Doman, former CEO of Western Forest Products. The Elk Lake sawmill's high efficiency allowed it to remain operating through the housing-market collapse in the US. This is the second recent change that marks a decline in local mill ownership. Last year, Georgia-Pacific purchased Grant's panelboard mill in Englehart.
