Due to a fire there are no more campsites on the north-eastern shore of Chapin lake (high rock between the Nasmith creek portage landing and a point just east of the P215 landing). The fire also touched first 150-250m of the portage - the trail is sometimes obliterated with fallen trees, but since the terrain is pretty open it's possible to walk around. Some flagging tape is there to point in the right direction. Miraculously, a small campsite on the point on the northern shore, just east of P215 landing, is in good shape.

Thanks for the report eddy_turn. I was on Chapin in October 2017 but could only ever find one campsite even though two were marked on my map. Hope the fire didn't do too much damage up there. After Chapin came the easiest portage in Temagami down to Nasmith Creek. I hope you enjoyed.

Bushwacker, you obviously traveled this route in the wrong direction - the portage you mention comes before Chapin lake, not after it. On a serious note: on my latest trip in Yorston-LER-Misabi range area (haven't been to Ames creek though) I found the Nasmith creek portage was the only one that needed significant maintenance with power tools. Lots of big trees to climb/carry over.

Sorry to hear about that... does anyone know when that happened, I’m assuming 2018? I was last there in 2017 as well.

I think you are correct: a fire in this area was reported in 2018.
