Some update on a portage around Dead Beaver falls, towards Twinkle Lake. I traveled it twice in the last 10 years and agree with the Ottertooth map that describes it as hard to follow. This year we flagged part of the portage between its north landing and the bog in the middle, up to a steep descend down a rock face after the bog crossing. Remainder of the trail, going south, is more or less discernible and is mostly marked with old blazes, often missing. There’s a big rock before the bog (going south) and a route around that rock marked with old tape. This tape is almost invisible now, and we found no trail following it though it’s possible to bushwhack. An alternative route climbs over the rock and is marked with old blazes. It’s steeper, but the trail is otherwise better – shorter and quite open. So, we flagged it following the blazes.
