Hi Everyone, i'm planning a trip this summer (mid-June) to Northern part of Temagami and would like to clarify in which direction certain rivers flow and further if up-stream travel possible? Would appreciate any input on the following sections of river (both flow direction and if navigable upstream). 1. South Lady Evelyn river (SLER) from Whitemud to Florence River 2. Florence River from SELR junction to Florence Lake 3. LER Dees Lake to Florence River 4. LER from Gamble to Macpherson 5. Grays river from Grays lake to Macpherson. 6. Elissa Creek from Tretheway to Gamble Brian, a potential update to the maps could include the direction of flow for certain rivers, especially if upstream paddling is difficult/not recommended. Thank you to everyone in this community for the continued support. Evan |

Sorry the first line should have read mid-July for when we are travelling this area. |

Hi Evan, Except for the SLER upstream of the Florence, the LER shall present no water level issues in July and can be negotiated any direction. Same goes for the Florence river itself. As for the flow direction, all rivers you mentioned are tributaries of the LER. This kind of exhausts my knowledge of the matter.

To address flow direction, all the rivers/creeks you mention flow into the Montreal River via the LER at Mowat Landing. So for example the Florence R flows north into the LER of which it is a tributary. If you look at a map just establish the direction towards the LER/Montreal and that’s downstream. The same holds true for the only other major watershed in Temagami, which is the Sturgeon. Find either the Sturgeon or the Montreal on a Temagami map, and any route that goes away from that is upstream... The Montreal watershed gets to the St. Lawrence & ocean via the Ottawa, whereas the Sturgeon waters have to take a long detour via L Nippising, French R, Lake Huron, Niagara Falls, Toronto etc. |

Interestingly, the headwaters of the Montreal and the South Lady Evelyn rivers are located less than a kilometer apart and are connected by a single portage, while a paddling distance from any of these headwaters to the confluence significantly exceeds one hundred kilometers. So if one's ready to paddle and portage for just 3-4 weeks, it's possible to make a loop that will include nothing but these 2 rivers. Plus a 750 meters portage between Smoothwater and Apex lakes. |
