Every Guide Is a Butcher Jack McIsaac, the last Mattawa guide to work at Keewaydin, butchering meat for the dining hall outside the icehouse in 1963. And he is also demonstrating the versatility of a Keewaydin guide. Until 1970, there was no refrigerator on the island and everything had to be stored in this icehouse. Ice was drawn from the lake in late winter each year. During the summer, food was brought to the island on the daily boat service that made the rounds of the lake. In 1963, the boat servicing Keewaydin was the Aubrey Cosens. Prior to WW II, for many years it was the steamer Belle of Temagami. |
